Storm Damage & Emergency Tree Help

Limbs down, a tree on the fence or a split trunk after a storm. Call and we’ll connect you with a local tree service for cleanup and hazard removal.

Safety first

  • Stay away from downed or sagging lines. Assume every wire is live. Call 911 for immediate danger and report it to NIPSCO.
  • Don’t go under hanging limbs. Broken branches caught in a canopy (often called “hangers”) can fall without warning.
  • A tree on the house? Get everyone out of that part of the house and call your insurance company. Take photos before anything is moved.

What a tree service does after a storm

Removing trees and limbs from roofs, cars and fences; cutting up and hauling downed trees; taking down hangers and split leaders; and assessing trees that survived but are now unsafe. Response times after a big regional storm depend on how many calls every tree service is getting, so call early and be specific about the hazard.

Watch out for storm chasers

After big storms, out-of-area crews go door to door. Be cautious about anyone asking for full payment up front, and ask for proof of insurance before any work starts.

Insurance questions

Whether a policy covers tree removal depends on your policy and what the tree hit. Call your insurer, and ask the tree service for a written, itemized estimate you can submit.
